We have all heard the cliché laughter is the best medicine. But is laughter really any good for us? Are there practical and specific things that can be attributed to a having a good laugh? Well, yes is the answer to both of those questions. Laughter puts us in a good mood for a start. And there is more. Here are the top 5 benefits of laughter.

1. Strengthens Relationships

Laughter 1

Laughter can help in just about every social situation. It makes people feel more comfortable and can help people to bond. In your closest relationships – those with your partner, parents or children – laughter is very important, but it is also important with people you do not know well. When you laugh, others will want to be with you and work with you, which is always a good thing.

2. Relieves Stress and Helps Relaxation

Laughter 2

It is hard to feel angry, upset, anxious or afraid while laughing. That is because it is a natural way to deal with stress. It can often make you see things differently and makes stressful situations and experiences easier to deal with. It also helps you relax and it relieves physical tension. This means you will be happier, less depressed, and you may even sleep better.

3. Keeps you Healthy

Laughter 3

Scientists have been linking laughter to general health for decades. For example, a good hearty laugh has a similar affect on the body as a light workout. Muscles in your face, shoulders and abdomen all work when you are laughing. Laughter is also thought to give a little helping hand to your immune system. Of course you should not replace medicines and doctor visits with laughing, but laughing more that you normally do cannot do any harm – and might even be doing you physical good.

4. Prevents Disease

Laughter 4

As well as keeping you healthy, laughing is thought to be a factor in preventing disease. Immune cells are given a boost while you are laughing, as are infection fighting anti-bodies. Laughing has also been shown to increase blood flow (which is good for your heart) and reduce blood sugar levels.

5. Makes Life More Fun

Laughter 5

This should not be underestimated as we could all do with a bit more fun in our day. Joy and zest are all things that you can never have enough of, and regular, hearty laughter can deliver them.
